Honoree: Caitlin Hanney, Shoreline
Nominator: Denise Swanson
This is a nomination for Caitlin Hanney, whose little boy has Down Syndrome. I met her a year and a half ago, and was impressed by her strength as a parent. Her son had serious needs after birth. Once he was home, he needed extra support to learn to eat. As he progressed and got stronger, his mother was ready to provide him with more challenges. She joined our playgroup, and was open to meeting other parents and supporting them in their own struggles.
She provides encouragement to parents with children who have similar feeding struggles, while advancing her expectations for her own son to advance his skills. This mom looks to what her son can achieve, provides him motivation and opportunities for practice to reach his potential. Caitlin has joined the Down Syndrome association for parents, taken part in their activities and has been a key parent for that organization's fundraiser and their toddler parents program. She always asks for help when she needs our support, and is open to suggestions.
Caitlin has continued to work part time as a Nurse. She has a carefully chosen nanny to ensure her precious little boy is happy and well cared for when she is at work. Caitlin knows her son well, with a good understanding of his development and what to expect from him as he grows older.
I believe Caitlin is one of those amazing parents who takes care of her special needs child and takes care of herself at the same time she supports others around her.
