Seattle's Child

Your guide to a kid-friendly city

Take your kids to see — and play — beautiful pianos in Seattle plazas

Brought to you by the folks at One Reel and Classic Pianos, Pianos in the Plaza is bringing music to public spaces in South Lake Union during Pianos in the Park’s temporary hiatus this summer.

Pianos in the Parks started in 2013 as an annual event that gives the public the chance to both see and play gorgeously designed pianos painted by local artists. Pianos in the Plaza is a more intimate version of the event, which is scheduled to be back next summer.

Running through August 30, it's a great way to hear outdoor pianists or let your kids practice their scales in a different environment. The first piano, located at Houdini Plaza, was designed by Rachel Sprague for Pianos in the Park in 2017. The other two pianos, located at Apollo Plaza, were designed exclusively for Pianos in the Plaza by Tim Detweiler and Joseph Steininger.

Take a jaunt down to South Lake Union before the summer is over and you may have a chance to catch an impromptu concert or create one of your own.
