Three Teens Advance to August Wilson Monologue Competition Finals

On Feb. 25 at Seattle Repertory Theatre, 10 Seattle-area high school students competed in the fourth annual Seattle August Wilson Monologue Competition finals. Each student performed a three-minute monologue from one of August Wilson’s plays to compete for cash prizes and a trip to New York City to participate in the National Finals on Broadway at the August Wilson Theatre in May 2014.

This year’s judges – Jerry Manning, Al Frank, Chic Street Man, Dena Levitin, G. Valmont Thomas, Sharon Nyree Williams and Peggy Scales – selected the following winners:

  • First place and $500 cash prize winner – Alexis Baldridge, Timberline High School, “Ma Rainey” from Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
  • Second place and $250 cash prize winner – Josiah Townsend, Mercer Island High School, “Memphis” from Two Trains Running
  • Third place and $100 cash prize winner – Jazzy Ducay, The Center School, “Becker” from Jitney
