Seattle's Child is proud to once again sponsor the Unsung Heroes being honored in February by the Department of Children, Youth and Families Strengthening Families Washington.
Nominations are accepted from around the state and and include biological parents, grandparents, foster and adoptive parents. Some volunteer at local schools; some have started nonprofit organizations; some mentor others in their communities. All honorees are true heroes: outstanding caregivers doing important work on behalf of children.
DeAnn Bogar of Olympia is a mother of two special-needs boys, a helping parent with South Sound Parent to Parent, and a strong advocate for all families who are caring for children with disabilities.
Because of the unique needs of her son, SSP2P was unable to find a one-on-one helping-parent match for DeAnn, which made her rise up and offer to become a helping parent so she could help others in similar situations. Since becoming a helping parent, DeAnn has given hundreds of hours to our program, and has even left her own children with her husband for days at a time to support other families in crisis at Seattle Children's or other hospitals.
DeAnn doesn't hesitate or think twice about helping other parents, often pushing her own problems aside to be the support for someone else.
Raising two children with special needs is a full-time, exhausting job in itself, but DeAnn always has time and energy to give to others in our community, whether it's to listen over coffee, jump start a car, send an email or offer to help with medical issues.
DeAnn's calm and friendly demeanor is comforting for families in times of need, and her unwavering support for children with disablities shines through in everything she does. Her smiles are contagious, her hugs are warm and welcoming and she is always willing to give them graciously. DeAnn is our unsung hero for these reasons and many more. We are filled with gratitude and blessings to have her as part of our SSP2P family, and for her unconditional loving support for families, our agency and throughout our community and beyond.
