Unsung Hero: Janet Grant

February is Parent Recognition Month. Strengthening Families Washington, of the Department of Early Learning for Washington State, believes there is no better way to recognize a parent, grandparent, foster or adoptive parent than by acknowledging the numerous and impressive things they do to strengthen their family and those around them in their community.

Seattle’s Child is proud to sponsor the Washington Unsung Hero Awards, recognizing our everyday heroes and honoring the important role caregivers play in children’s lives. There are 28 nominees for the 28 days of February, and Seattle’s Child will highlight each and every one.

Congratulations to the Unsung Hero for February 24

Janet Grant – Renton

Janet Grant has many of the strengths listed.  Fourteen years ago she fought to get custody of her nieces when they were in the child welfare system and were going to be adopted out to separate families. She and her siblings—who are also kinship caregivers—support each other. She and her nieces (who she calls her daughters) are very active in their church, the kinship support group, and their community.

In the last two years Janet has been instrumental in the growth of the Atlantic Street Kinship group. She is responsible for recruiting almost half of the current members to the group. Janet has a heart for caring for others and consistently gives 100%. Along with raising her now two teenage daughters, she works full time, is on the Rainier Community Center board and active on several committees at her church.

Janet writes poetry to help deal with stress. Recently she organized a Sweet 16 birthday party for her niece. At this party her sixteen year old was escorted into the event by two of her uncles representing her dad who passed away a few years ago.  As a mom, Janet makes sure that her daughters are active in the community. The girls are involved in sports, etiquette classes, writing poetry and singing.

We nominate Janet Grant as an Unsung Hero!
