Unsung Hero: Momma Shaelee lives her values, embraces parenting wholeheartedly

Seattle's Child is proud to once again sponsor the Unsung Heroes being honored in February by the Department of Children, Youth and Families Strengthening Families Washington.

Every day this month we'll present an Unsung Hero.

Nominations are accepted from around the state and include biological parents, grandparents, foster and adoptive parents. Some volunteer at local schools; some have started nonprofit organizations; some mentor others in their communities. All honorees are true heroes: outstanding caregivers doing important work on behalf of children.

Shaelee Evans, Sequim

I nominate Shaelee Evans, who I affectionately call Momma Shaelee. She is a mother of three confident children under the age of 11. Shaelee runs an eco-based tea business, serves as a community volunteer, and embraces parenting wholeheartedly. Momma Shaelee inspires me to not live as the circumstances of parenting may be but into what I desire it to become. She is one of the mothers that I most admire for her unyielding tenacity, fierce compassion and unwavering commitment to family and community.

Shaelee leaned into building a new life designed around the needs of three children, and did it with gratitude and patience. I still remember the amazement I had for Shaelee, when she showed me how she turned a one room house into a home for a family of four. Her ingenuity and initiative as a DIYer shined as she created individual, welcoming spaces for each child and for herself. Or how Shaelee invited community members that she often served to help her build an outdoor playspace for her children. What an honor it was to come together as a community and make her children's wish come true!

Momma Shaelee lives her values and strives to be an example of possibility for her children. She completed her degree and even won a business plan competition in spite of life's transitions. She constantly strives to improve herself and circumstances for her family. She consistently champions opportunities for children to be included in bioregional community gatherings. It has been and is a joy to journey alongside Momma Shaelee and her three children, and witness that family is beyond circumstance and full of possibilities!
