What's happening in Seattle for Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action

Black Lives Matter At School is a national coalition organizing for racial justice in education. Thousands of teachers in Seattle, and thousands more across the country will wear Black Lives Matter shirts to school Feb. 3-7, and teach lessons about restorative justice, institutional racism, Black identity, and Black history.

This year, the NAACP Youth Coalition of Seattle is taking a leading organizing role for the week of action. As Angelina Riley, a Rainier Beach High School 11th-grade student and member of the NAACP Youth Coalition, said in a press release, “Supporting Black Lives Matter at School is the first step in acknowledging a group of students who are marginalized not only in the education system but in every institutional system.”

"Supporting black lives doesn’t detract from or invalidate anyone else. In fact, it strengthens us all. It strengthens our community, our humanity, and uplifts those who have for too long been oppressed," said Aneesa Roidad, a 12th-grade student at Ballard High School in a press release.

In Seattle, the Black Lives Matter at School movement is fighting for these seven demands:

1) End “zero tolerance” discipline, and implement restorative justice

2) Hire more black teachers

3) Mandate Black history and Ethnic Studies in K-12 curriculum

4) Fund counselors not cops

5)Fully fund our public schools

6)Oppose standardized testing

7)Detracking

The lessons that educators teach during the week of action correspond to the 13 guiding principles of Black Lives Matter:

Monday: Restorative Justice, Empathy and Loving Engagement

Tuesday: Diversity and Globalism

Wednesday: Trans-Affirming, Queer Affirming and Collective Value

Thursday: Intergenerational, Black Families and Black Villages

Friday: Black Women and Unapologetically Black
