It’s World Ocean Weekend: Celebrate the ocean and the creatures who call it home June 5-6 at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Tacoma.

Special events are planned Saturday and Sunday.

World Ocean Weekend fun

In the aquariums, visitors can watch as aquarists dive, feed and care for the animals.

Water-loving animals elsewhere in the zoo also will get special attention and enrichments. For instance, Blizzard the polar bear will get yummy ice treats, the sea otters will have otter pops, and the sea lions and penguins will play with special enrichment toys.

Note: The zoo is trying to avoid attracting large crowds. Therefore, these activities will happen at unscheduled times throughout the two days.

World Ocean Weekend is an effort to call particular attention to animals that are threatened in the wild. For example, plastic pollution, chemicals, oil, overfishing and acidification all are harmful.

The special activities are free with regular zoo admission, and the zoo will be open 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. both days. Here’s how to buy timed tickets in advance.

In other news, Point Defiance has small-group experiences available.

Firstly, the zoo has resumed its popular behind-the-scenes tour inside the Pacific Seas Aquarium. It involves a special backstage look, hands-on experiences and a chance to meet the aquarists who work there. It is for up to five people from one household, all age 8 and up (an adult must be present), on Saturdays; $300 for member group, $400 for non-members.

And there’s new offering: Jammin’ with Jellies, a 30-minute, behind-the-scenes experience focused on jellyfish. Also for up to five people, ages 8 and up (adult must be present); available most days; $100 per member group, $150 per non-member group.
