Strengthening Families Washington 2016 Unsung Hero: Todd Crooks

2016 Unsung Hero Todd Crooks

February 17, 2016

Honoree:  Todd Crooks, Seattle

Nominator:  Laura Crooks

Some background to our family before I launch into why my husband, Todd Crooks, is absolutely worthy of this recognition.  When our mellow first born turned 3, our family changed dramatically…triplets were born.  Natural triplets, they were born at 29 week, almost 3 months early.  The comment we would commonly hear was “boy, I’m glad that’s not me”, and Todd’s standard response was “I’m glad it’s not you too!”  Four kids, especially with three babies at once were a ton of work but Todd was the model dad.

Fast forward 5 years later, Todd lost his job.  This could have been devastating, not because of money, but because he was the breadwinner, his identity and his pride.  But this was not Todd.  He became the PTA president at the school, the “pusher” of nutritious meals, supervised homework, and most importantly was there at the end of each day to support our kids. He listened to their stories, offered advice, and always had a loving hug.

Since that time, we have had other challenges.  We have two boys diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, another with mental illness.  Through it all, Todd is the rock.  He is the one we all turn to when we need help, advice, or just that loving hug.  He gently guides, is strong, and sometimes cries in private.    It’s not been easy, but we have 4 stellar young adults, who are strong, kind, and supportive to others because of the role model they had in their dad.
