Seattle’s Child is proud to once again sponsor the Unsung Heroes being honored in February by the Department of Children, Youth and Families Strengthening Families Washington.
Every day this month we’ll present an Unsung Hero.
Nominations are accepted from around the state and include biological parents, grandparents, foster and adoptive parents. Some volunteer at local schools; some have started nonprofit organizations; some mentor others in their communities. All honorees are true heroes: outstanding caregivers doing important work on behalf of children.
Rose Green & Elijah Jackson, La Push
I have known Rose and Elijah for a short time, approximately four months, and I have seen tremendous efforts to improve their parenting skills.
The main reason I am nominating them for the Unsung Hero award is because of their parental resilience. They both are in the process of overcoming some extreme adversities and yet are raising two well-adjusted toddlers.
Rose spends her time working at our Tribal Senior Center and Elijah volunteers at the Fire Department. Rose is eager to obtain full-time employment and is taking the necessary steps needed to secure employment. Elijah also takes his own time to cut firewood for tribal elders and does not charge them any money. They are part of many different groups throughout the Tribe and participate in a Transformative Parenting Group every Wednesday, in which I am the facilitator.
I feel this nomination is well-deserved based on all they do for the community and their own children. Showing compassion to others in need is an example of great role modeling for their children.
