For adults: “Why We Read” by Shannon Reed 

As a lifelong reader, discovering this book felt like making a new friend or a connection with a stranger in line who shares similar passions. Author Shannon Reed seeks to identify, expand and free us from unnecessary rules or fears we might have about what we should or shouldn’t be choosing to read. Her subtle humor and wisdom would have anyone wishing they could meet her for coffee to chat about books.

For kids: “Gifts from the Garbage Truck” by Andrew Larsen 

This fascinating true story follows Nelson Molina, a former New York City sanitation worker who views garbage in a different way. He saved over 45,000 objects from the trash collected in the El Barrio neighborhood to fix or repurpose. Molina’s creations are now on display at his museum, Treasures in the Trash. Andrew Larsen’s inspiring picture book encourages readers to think about consumption, waste and what happens to the things we throw away.
