Raise your hand if you’re recipe-challenged, time-crunched or uninspired about what to make for dinner. ACME Farms + Kitchen’s Locavore boxes could be what you need to refresh your family’s meal routine.
The Bellingham-based business was launched by Cara Piscitello and Joy Rubey, two trained architects and mothers of young children looking for a way to source healthy, locally produced food. Delivering Locavore boxes containing ingredients for truly farm-fresh meals to homes, CSA-style, is their answer. ACME recently expanded its delivery to Seattle zip codes, allowing parents to skip multiple trips to the grocery, farmers market and area farms, saving money—and precious time.
All produce is organic and sourced from small- or medium-sized farms. Meals serve three to four, depending on appetites. Small boxes include ingredients to make three or four dinners, and large boxes contain enough food for five meals. Gluten-free and vegetarian boxes are offered as well.
ACME’s boxes arrive with cooking tips, meal suggestions and recipes: Make parfaits with Bow Hill blueberries and Samish Bay yogurt for a kid-approved breakfast, or whip up guacamole and melt farmstand cheese inside Tadeo’s flour tortillas for lunch. Some of the recipes (ahem, red kidney bean curry with roasted cauliflower) that accompany Locavore boxes might not please the pickiest eaters — even if parents give them the thumbs-up — but lentil-kale hand pies and fresh spaghetti with broccoli sauce weave greens into dinner in creative ways that kids will enjoy.
Customers place weekly online orders by midnight on Sunday and receive Locavore boxes delivered to home or work on Thursdays. ACME serves Seattle and surrounding cities, including Bellevue, Renton and Bothell. Unlike a traditional CSA, ACME customers don’t know exactly what will be in each week’s box (a newsletter offers hints) and particular items can’t be swapped out.
