Alejandra Ornelas, Lakewood

Alejandra has participated with her daughter, Yaliani, in the Early Head Start program for the past two and a half years. Alejandra is a single mother. Yaliani has multiple disabilities that require Alejandra’s care 24 hours a day. Alejandra does not speak English, but this has not been an impediment for her to seek help to ensure the well-being of her daughter.

Alejandra has been able to recognize that she needs to ask for help and receive help, so it has allowed her to form a strong support system for herself and Yaliani, with therapists, home visitors, doctors and mental health professionals. Alejandra has also managed to ask for help in religious organizations other members of the community.

Alejandra does not have transportation, so she organizes her time to request public transportation so as not to miss the multiple medical and therapy appointments that her daughter has. Alejandra knows where to call for help. Alejandra has many dreams for herself and for her girl. She is also very attentive advocating for her girl to receive inclusive education because she is always aware of Yaliani’s development. I think Alejandra has managed to do a great job in overcoming difficult communication, transportation, housing and financial obstacles to provide well-being to her daughter, so I have decided to nominate her because she is an angel for her daughter.

Nominator: Edith Magaly Diaz-Sierra
