If you need a little extra motivation to get your kid reading, how about a nudge from one of Seattle’s biggest sports stars?
Cal Raleigh — All-Star catcher for the Seattle Mariners and a fan favorite across the region — is teaming up with PEMCO Insurance to launch the new “Get Caught Reading” Challenge, and it’s all about making reading feel fun, visible, and worth celebrating.
The challenge, which kicked off March 26 during National Reading Month and runs through the Mariners’ regular season (Sept. 27, 2026), is simple and very kid-friendly: snap a photo of your child reading anywhere. Curled up on the couch, stretched out at the park, waiting for snacks at a game — wherever a book happens to be.
Parents or guardians can submit those photos online for a chance to win prizes, including autographed items from Raleigh (a pretty great incentive for M’s fans young and old).
Beyond the prizes, the heart of the campaign is about building confidence and showing kids that reading is something to be proud of. For Raleigh, it’s also about sharing a message he believes in.
“I didn’t take the most traditional path, and that’s okay,” he said. “I just kept working, stayed focused, and believed it would pay off.”
So if your kid is already a reader, consider this a fun way to celebrate it. And if they’re not (yet), maybe getting “caught” with a book — and a little encouragement from a Mariners star — is just the spark they need.
