February is Parent Recognition Month. Strengthening Families Washington, of the Department of Early Learning for Washington State, believes there is no better way to recognize a parent, grandparent, foster or adoptive parent than by acknowledging the numerous and impressive things they do to strengthen their family and those around them in their community.
Seattle's Child is proud to sponsor the Washington Unsung Hero Awards, recognizing our everyday heroes and honoring the important role caregivers play in children's lives. There are 28 nominees for the 28 days of February, and Seattle's Child will highlight each and every one.
Congratulations to the Unsung Hero for February 26: Debra Gullstrand – Milton, WA:
This is a single grandmother, who is employed full time and caring for 5 grandchildren on my caseload. She is always very positive, resourceful, and determined to provide her grandchildren with the best care possible. She was a protective factor for her grandchildren when they were in an abusive situation and stepped up to take them into to her one bedroom loft apartment with no complaints. Not only is she employed full time, she is also an active member in her community and church. The children are all well behaved, incredibly polite and sweet. Children like this can only be product of very good parenting that provide structure, rules, stability and most importantly love.
