February is Parent Recognition Month. Strengthening Families Washington, of the Department of Early Learning for Washington State, believes there is no better way to recognize a parent, grandparent, foster or adoptive parent than by acknowledging the numerous and impressive things they do to strengthen their family and those around them in their community.
Seattle's Child is proud to sponsor the Washington Unsung Hero Awards, recognizing our everyday heroes and honoring the important role caregivers play in children's lives. There are 28 nominees for the 28 days of February, and Seattle's Child will highlight each and every one.
Congratulations to the Unsung Hero for February 1:
Miranda Fort – Silverdale
Miranda Fort is an incredible hero in my eyes. A Navy spouse and mother to three children with disabilities, Miranda shows strength and resilience like no one else. She is the Vice-President of the Military Special Needs Network, and advocates tirelessly for military families around the globe. Miranda has testified for Autism therapy equality with Senator Patty Murray and has gone above and beyond to help other military families seek answers, resources, friendship, and acceptance. Her children have very complex needs and Miranda continuously researches and advocates, ensuring that each one of them has the greatest opportunity for success.
Miranda has always provided an outpouring of love and support for fellow special-needs parents, and in turn, has built a phenomenal system of support. Her middle child endured life-saving brain surgery last year while her husband was deployed to the Middle East. Families from around the country showed their support by sending cards, photos, and meals, providing Miranda the strength and resilience through it all. She gives and gives to her community, her children, and to the world. She teaches her children and those around her every day that nothing can hold you back; that you can be courageous. Please consider Miranda Fort for the Strengthening Families Unsung Hero Award – she is an extraordinary champion, making a difference in her children's lives and those around her. I am so lucky to call her my friend.
