When fellow parents ask how I find time to read with a toddler at home, I tell them I read what I love! Here’s a peek at what I’m enjoying and what my child and I are reading together, because finding books they love will help your kids read more, too.
What we’re reading: “Hey, Water!” by Antoinette Portis. Portis’ delightful introduction to the science of water works for even very young readers. “Hey, water!” it begins, “I know you. You’re everywhere.” A little girl follows water in many forms, from her bath, to the sprinklers, rivers, lakes, clouds, fog and more. Both the text and illustrations are simple enough to engage preschoolers, and should prompt many more discussions about water in the world. Perfect for our rainy Seattle spring!
What I’m reading: “The Truants” by Kate Weinberg. This moody, atmospheric read is part mystery, part coming-of-age story. Jess is a freshman at the University of East Anglia, where she’s come to study with charismatic English professor Lorna Clay. As Jess is drawn into Lorna’s confidence, she develops a tight-knit group of friends. Their emotional entanglements become increasingly complex, and when there’s a sudden and unexpected death, Jess has to face questions about her own culpability.
