Heartwarming reads for the holidays

When the days get shorter and the weather gets more blustery, it's time to curl up with your kids and read cheery holiday books. We've compiled a short list of our favorite holiday children's books. These reimagined classics and new titles will each add light and warmth to your family's holiday story times.

 Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott with cover design by Anna Bond (Vintage Classics, 2012 reprint)

A treasure that measures the weight of tradition and family with the desires in one’s own heart. An absolute joy that every little girl (and boy) should experience.

Grade 3 and up

 

Love, Santa, written by Martha Brockenbrough and illustrated by Lee White (Scholastic, 2017)

What could be better than an illustrated epistolary book for children? Brockenbrough and White have given us a beautiful, poignant story to help families deal with the secret of Santa, a secret whose revelation can sometimes cause disappointment and confusion. This sweet book reminds us that the holidays are about love and magic no matter how enlightened we might be.

Grade 2 and up

 

My True Love Gave to Me, by various authors (St. Martin’s Griffin, 2016 reprint)

Start a new holiday tradition by sharing books by the fire with your favorite tween or teen. These  12 holiday stories by YA authors like Rainbow Rowell and Matt de la Peña will coax older kids into hanging with the family for an evening or two.

The Sweet Smell of Christmas, by Patricia M. Scarry (Golden Books, 2003 reprint)
