Seattle Parks’ Big Day of Play is on Saturday

Join classes, watch performances, or play virtual games

Seattle Parks Department’s annual Big Day of Play on Saturday won’t be like any other in the past.

The coronavirus pandemic makes it impossible to have a big in-person shindig at Rainer Community Center. But it does have one thing in common with extravaganzas of yesteryear.

It will be big.

Classes, games and performances

The celebration will have virtual classes, interactive games and performances from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Here’s the schedule.

All these things will run on available on cable TV, radio, online and on Zoom. Here are the details on where to find it.

In preparation, the Parks Department is giving out free play kits packed with jump-ropes, sidewalk chalk and other goodies.

Here are two places to pick up kits:

– Lake City Court from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday

– Othello International Festival from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday

Another part of the festivities is a virtual wellness fair, that will host a variety of local organizations.

And participants have the chance to win prizes.

Signature event

“Big Day of Play is our signature event at Seattle Parks and Recreation,” said Christopher Williams, deputy Superintendent, in a press release. “This free event supports community members in enjoying the health benefits – both physical and mental – of connecting with others through active recreation, and it helps show adults and kids how much fun there is to be had in our parks and open spaces.”

Here are some more virtual events to catch: Virtual events picks for Aug 10-16
