Seattle Public Schools is seeking unpaid volunteers from ethnically, linguistically and culturally diverse communities to serve on the newly-formed Equity and Race Advisory Committee, for terms of up to two years.
The purpose of this committee is to advise Seattle Public Schools staff on issues of equity in education. The committee's work will include a periodic evaluation of and input to the district's ongoing equity activities and implementation of equity recommendations.
This Advisory Committee will represent diverse voices and perspectives across the education system and community on equity; address authentic concerns with the current system and recognized disproportions; and make thoughtful and timely policy, procedures and school support recommendations for change for the 2012-13 school year.
The committee will meet once every month with the possibility of additional meetings on special issues after the startup period. District staff will facilitate the meetings. The committee will have co-chairpersons consisting of one volunteer member and one staff member.
Seattle Public Schools students, families, community members, staff, non-district community organizations and representatives of higher learning institutions are encouraged to apply. The first meeting is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 23, from 4 to 6 p.m. in auditorium of the John Stanford Center, located at 2445 3rd Ave. in Seattle.
