Unsung Hero: April Hoffmann, 'caregiver, nurturer, friend and truly an angel'

Seattle's Child is proud to once again sponsor the Unsung Heroes being honored in February by the Department of Children, Youth and Families Strengthening Families Washington.

Nominations are accepted from around the state and and include biological parents, grandparents, foster and adoptive parents. Some volunteer at local schools; some have started nonprofit organizations; some mentor others in their communities. All honorees are true heroes: outstanding caregivers doing important work on behalf of children.

April Hoffmann

April Hoffmann (of Federal Way) is my hero in every sense of the word.

She is the most selfless, giving person – not only to her family but to all of those lucky enough to be in her life. I have had the joy of working with her for the last three years.

We are both social workers, and the stress of our job can weigh heavy on us. She never lets anything get her down and gives her all to her job, while keeping up beautiful relationships with her friends and family.

April was a teen mom and pregnant at 15. She gave birth to her daughter and raised her while still attending high school. In her early 20s, she gave birth to twin boys who both have developmental disabilities. All three of her children are extraordinary representations of the lovely human April is. As a single mom, she has given her all to her children without question.

With her children grown now, she is finding out who she is without just being “Mom.” And let me tell you – she is a caregiver, nurturer, friend, and truly an angel in my life. She is an unsung hero.

Nominated by: Allie O'Farrell, family support specialist, Truman Head Start
