Seattle’s Child is proud to once again sponsor the Unsung Heroes being honored in February by the Department of Children, Youth and Families Strengthening Families Washington.
Every day this month we’ll present an Unsung Hero.
Nominations are accepted from around the state and include biological parents, grandparents, foster and adoptive parents. Some volunteer at local schools; some have started nonprofit organizations; some mentor others in their communities. All honorees are true heroes: outstanding caregivers doing important work on behalf of children.
Sarah Worthington, Hoquiam
I have worked as the Family Resource Coordinator for Sarah’s family for over two years. I have seen the number of children in her family grow from three to six, with all having special needs.
Sarah put together a Facebook page, Grays Harbor Differently Abled Families. She has a big following and offers help to many families. Their many events are advertised, and most things she is spearheading such as Easter egg hunts, cookie baking and so forth are for other families with special-needs children.
She organized a group of families to participate in the Loggers Day parade in Hoquiam and the Festival of Lights parade in Aberdeen.
Just today Sarah was interviewed by the local paper to discuss some of these upcoming events.
Sarah has put together for two years an event called “Jingle All the Way” that is held at the Aberdeen mall for folks to come down and learn about different types of abilities. Families have a booth that describes various illness, etc. Sarah gets sponsors and special guests and door prizes donated.
Sarah serves on the board of directors for the ARC of Grays Harbor County. She also Special Olympics in football, basketball and softball.
She recently worked to gather a group of gals to get dresses for a special-needs prom.
Sarah has gathered a host of super-hero costumes to do photo shoots for families with their kids in super-hero clothing.
I have watched Sara advocate for the children in her home as well as children of others. Her mindset is to always help as many people as she can.
