Go to town: fair trade instruments for the whole family

North Seattle is a destination and a musical state of mind.

Jamtown is a cozy shop and classroom on Lake City Way, but it offers a virtual trip-’round-the-world through music. Founded by “Jamtown John” Hayden in 1995, the shop features award-winning instrument sets sourced from artisans in 10 countries, whom John visits personally.

The result of this collaboration is a selection of carefully thought-out products, such as the Jamtown Junior Pak, which includes three percussion instruments from Peru and Indonesia, a CD to play along with, a booklet with lyrics and an instrument guide.

Though the shop has been operating for almost two decades, John started leading music classes when his daughter, now 6, was born. Kids 1 and up are engaged with music, movement and fun to “play a beat you can repeat,” accompanied by John on percussion, piano, ukulele, flutes and thumb piano. Jam on!
