Local schools to participate in Great ShakeOut earthquake drill

The largest earthquake drill in the world takes place Oct. 20, 2022.

Schools across the Puget Sound region and the state of Washington will participate in the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill. The largest earthquake drill in the world takes place on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2022, at 10:20 a.m. at schools, organizations and in homes around the globe.

The drills are an annual opportunity for students and adults to practice what to do during earthquakes and to improve preparedness. Seattle Public Schools have undergone earthquake safety improvements over the past decade, including seismic upgrades and building remodels. With the likelihood of an earthquake occurring in the Northwest, schools regularly do drills and have emergency management plans in place.
