“The Full Moon Coffee Shop,” by Mai Mochizuki, translated from Japanese by Jesse Kirkwood
Allow yourself to be transported to a very special coffee shop staffed by human-sized cats in this delightful tale. Each chapter highlights a character who is struggling with change and their life’s purpose. When the moon is full, they dream of a coffee shop where magical cats reveal the wisdom of the stars and urge them to adjust their outlook. Chapter by chapter, readers begin to see that the characters are connected, and there’s a reason the cats have chosen to help these particular people. For, as the myth in Mai Mochizukiās story goes, if you are kind to a cat, the cat will find a way to return that kindness.
For kids:
“A Bear, a Fish and a Fishy Wish” by Daniel Bernstrom
A hungry bear spots a small, pink fish swimming in a nearby stream. The fish wishes to return home by jumping up a waterfall. A chase ensues and the bear catches the fish before āten thousand fish moreā fly overhead, knocking the bear over who drops the fish. Whose wish will be granted? The surprise ending shows thoughtfulness and care between creatures. Children will enjoy pointing out the tiny fish as it swims upstream and tracking the bear above the woodland waterfall. Brief rhyming text and cinematic digital illustrations make this a picture book worth sharing again and again.
