Congratulations unsung hero: Melissa Wooley

Seattle’s Child recognizes the wonderful, everyday heroes nominated for the Washington Unsung Hero Awards this month.

February is Parent Recognition Month. Strengthening Families Washington, of the Department of Early Learning for Washington State, believes there is no better way to recognize a parent, grandparent, foster or adoptive parent than by acknowledging the numerous and impressive things they do to strengthen their family and those around them in their community.

Seattle’s Child is proud to sponsor the Washington Unsung Hero Awards, recognizing our everyday heroes and honoring the important role caregivers play in children’s lives. There are 28 nominees for the 28 days of February, and Seattle’s Child will highlight each and every one.

Congratulations to the Unsung Hero for February 13

Melissa Wooley – Seattle

Melissa is one of the most caring and committed parents I have ever met. She has five children, ranging in age from 2 to 9 years old. She has participated in the North Seattle College Latona 3-5 Parent Cooperative Preschool with each child, serving on the board each year in various positions. She is an excellent role model as an assistant teacher in the classroom, providing kind, caring and culturally-sensitive interactions with the children, while building supportive relationships with the other parents. When a family with Sudanese refugee parents joined, Melissa went out of her way to give them rides and support. When the class had enrollment problems this year and three families with African refugee parents, Melissa stepped up to do most of the board jobs while reaching out to provide rides and support for the other families, who are still struggling to get established in this country. She is devoted to building a caring, supportive community for children and families, and a great unsung hero.
