February is Parent Recognition Month. Strengthening Families Washington, of the Department of Early Learning for Washington State, believes there is no better way to recognize a parent, grandparent, foster or adoptive parent than by acknowledging the numerous and impressive things they do to strengthen their family and those around them in their community.
Seattle’s Child is proud to sponsor the Washington Unsung Hero Awards, recognizing our everyday heroes and honoring the important role caregivers play in children’s lives. There are 28 nominees for the 28 days of February, and Seattle’s Child will highlight each and every one.
Congratulations to the Unsung Hero for February 24
Nicole Homan – Federal Way
Nicole Homan and her son, Austin May, are very special people. They both share a common bond in an illness that is life threatening, but more than that, they share the love and kindness that we all wish we had. You would not know that they suffer from a crippling disease that takes away their ability to use their joints. This is not about her challenges, but the overwhelming support and help she offers the school and community. She never complains or even lets on that she is in pain, but rather comes to PTA events, helps run the holiday gift shop that allows kids to have the opportunity to purchase gifts for family members, volunteers for field trips, and more. Some days are good days and you see no cane, other days are a bit rougher when you see the cane, and oftentimes she has to go to the hospital because she has given too much of herself to someone else or to a cause. Once she gets out of the hospital and gains enough rest and has recovered, she continues to give of her time, talent and energy to the school and our community. Mrs. Homan is a true treasure and gift to our lives. What she is able to do and give, even through all of the pain – I have nothing to complain about. She is AMAZING!
