February is Parent Recognition Month. Strengthening Families Washington, of the Department of Early Learning for Washington State, believes there is no better way to recognize a parent, grandparent, foster or adoptive parent than by acknowledging the numerous and impressive things they do to strengthen their family and those around them in their community.
Seattle’s Child is proud to sponsor the Washington Unsung Hero Awards, recognizing our everyday heroes and honoring the important role caregivers play in children’s lives. There are 28 nominees for the 28 days of February, and Seattle’s Child will highlight each and every one.

Summer McGrady – Seattle
Summer McGrady will tell you that she prefers to stay behind the scenes and promote the great work that others are doing to support families in our community. The truth is, I don't know anyone who shows more courage and exerts more energy to give her child and the families around her the best opportunities to thrive. Summer bravely helped her infant son to survive three years ago, and she continues to make sure that he reaches his full potential by taking him to daily therapy appointments and staying on the cutting edge of innovative parenting techniques. While Summer's son has special needs, she ensures that he is seen as a little boy who loves to play with animals, make music and get into trouble from time to time – just like his friends. She provides him with ample love and attention, and gives him room to explore and learn from his mistakes, which is the greatest display of bravery. Summer invests in the community by advocating for all children through many organizations, like Easter Seals Washington, Parent to Parent, Washington Hands & Voices, and others. Because Summer is amazingly strong and is always assisting others, it has taken her time to feel comfortable accepting help. She is growing in this regard by seeking flexibility from her employer and connecting herself and her son with as many community supports as possible. I know that I join many people as I express that Summer is, without a doubt, my Unsung Hero.
