FOCS invitation: Join summit about AI and accessibility

March 7 online event will consider AI's role in access to technology

Microsoft Ability Summit

Families of Color Seattle (FOCS), the nonprofit dedicated to connecting parents of color and building a loving community of families of color, closed out Black History Month with an invitation to all parents—to join in on a free Microsoft Ability Sumit. The online March 7 event will be a digital exploration of accessible AI and inclusive technology solutions.

How can AI drive inclusion? The newest technology can bridge the accessibility divide, according to Microsoft event planners. Through the summit, the company will bring together leading experts who each exhibit a deep understanding of disabilities in the workplace to discuss inclusive solutions and ways to improve opportunities for people across the disability spectrum.

The goal, Microsoft says, is to “build a more inclusive culture while including voices across the disability spectrum.” Along with information about leading accessible technology, the event will include real-life stories of empathy and vulnerability as well as discussions on how accessibility empowers everyone.

An ‘opportunity to explore’

In announcing the event, FOCS urged parents to ā€œtake advantage of this amazing opportunity to explore new technologies and be part of the effort to dismantle systemic racism within technology for the betterment of our children’s future.ā€

It celebrates people with disabilities, allies, and accessibility leaders who will provide learning opportunities at the event.

The online event, will run from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., will feature several Black women leaders, and will close with a keynote speech by Deborah Watts, cousin of Emmett Till and founder of the Emmett Till Legacy Foundation.

Other topics to be discussed include:

  • Co-designing for neurodiversity
  • Bridging the disability divide with AI tools
  • The role of policy in advancing accessibility
  • Promises and practices of mental health and technology
  • Building an ecosystem to drive accessible technology
  • Skilling disabled talent and accessibility allies
  • Truths and aspirations of accessible generative AI
  • Empowering the technology community for an accessible future
  • How the community can shape accessible physical spaces
