A group of community members, students and local swim clubs are working to raise funds to keep swimming pools at Hazen and Lindbergh High Schools open for the coming school year.
Facing yet another year of state cuts to its budget due to the economic downturn, the district met with community members in October to lay out a plan to keep the pools open for the 2011-2012 school year. The initial target amount presented by the district was $60,000, needed to bridge the gap between pool operating costs and income from pool rentals and swim fees.
Since then, the group has raised nearly $30,000, with more pledged. Along with raising funds, the district is reviewing a proposal about a slight increase in pool usage fees. To get involved in this effort, make an online donation (scroll down to Renton Pool Donations), or go for a swim or take a lesson at one of the pools (proceeds go to the fund).
