MOHAI wants teen photographers to share their Seattle

Photo competition applications due soon

Have you got a teen in the house who enjoys photography? They may want to connect with the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) before May 14.

MOHAI Youth Advisors (MYA), a teen-led group, is looking for passionate teen photographers who want to share their unique perspectives on the city of Seattle. This week, the group has called for photo submissions of places that hold special meaning for the teen photographers who snap them. Chosen photos will become part of an in-person pop-up and online exhibition at the museum this summer.

“Our goal is to showcase a variety of perspectives on the city and inspire curiosity about the places around us,” the group said in a MOHAI announcement on Facebook. “We are looking for photos that help share your unique lens on the city, and we will draw threads between it and the history of our region.”

The photo submission deadline isĀ by May 14.

Speaking of submitting…

Applications for membership in teen-driven MOHAI Youth Advisors for the 2025-2026 school year will open this month. Interested students should apply by June 30, 2025.

Youth advisors help guide the museum in its effort to meet the interests and needs of teens. Members of the group are charged with finding creative ways to engage teens in local history. They also provide input on the development of museum programming and exhibits. Along with working on their own projects and activities, youth advisors also interact with MOHAI staff for a real behind-the-scenes experience of the museum and a deeper dive into local history. The twelve high school student members meet regularly from September to June and are offered a monthly stipend.

MYA is the voice behind Rainy Day History, an award-winning podcast that explores Seattle’s past. Season 3 will be released this fall.

Contact the MOHAI Education Department to learn more about the application process.
