Ideas for not-so-scary Halloween fun

We know not all trick-or-treaters are alike ā€“ there are plenty of little ones out there who would prefer not to be spooked (and that goes for their parents, too).

So, we singled out some very special events for young kids, sans the creepy thematic elements. Get ready to park your wands and brooms at the door and head out for some entertaining, not-so-scary Halloween fun.

Water Fun

 

Zoo Boo at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium

October 19-20. 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Location: 5400 N Pearl St, Tacoma, WA 98407

Cost: $16-$26 per person, free for ages 2 and under. Buy tickets here.

This annual event at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium includes treat and craft stations for kids and pumpkins and other enrichments for walruses, polar bears, sting rays, and other animals.

 

Pumpkin PlungeĀ 

Saturday, October 19. Time TBA

Location: Federal Way Community Center, 876 S 333rd St, Federal Way, WA 98003

Cost: $10 for youth, $12 for adult.

Join the first Annual Pumpkin Plunge at the Federal Way Community Center. Enjoy a unique pumpkin-picking experience in our pools, where you can swim around with your pumpkins and take one home afterward. Each participant will choose a floating pumpkin from the pool. Children under 4 must be accompanied by an adult in the water.

 

Halloween Bounce and Swim

Friday, October 25. 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Location: Green Lake Community Center, 7201 East Green Lake Dr N, Seattle, WA 98115

Cost: Free

Green Lake Community Center and Evans Pool are co-hosting a haunted celebration! This event has it all from carnival games and bouncy houses from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Ā They will have two public swims. One at 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and the second one at 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. It’s a family swim where you dodge the floating pumpkins!Ā Swimsuits are a must. Canned food donations for local food banks will be collected at the door.

 

Do a Dash!

 

Monster Dash in West Seattle

Saturday, October 26. 9:30 a.m.

Location: West Seattle Lincoln Park, 8011 Fauntleroy Wy SW, Seattle, WA 98136

Cost: Ages 18 and under $20-$25, ages 18 and older $35-$45, kids dash participants (12 and under) $20-$25

Join this fall fun run for families. At 10:30 a.m., there will be a 250-meter dash for kids 12 and younger, followed by a 100-meter kidsā€™ dash (5 and under). They will also have a family fun zone featuring games, activities and prizes. Register here.

 

Run Scared

Sunday, October 27. 8:15 a.m.

Location: Seward Park, 5900 Lake Washington Blvd S, Seattle, WA 98118

Cost: $50-$55 for 10K, $40-$45 for the 5K and 2 miler, and Kids Dash is free.

Before the race, there is a Halloween treasure hunt for the kids. Event registration includes awesome swag and tons of race day fun, including a costume contest, hot apple cider, candy corn tasting bar, free kids dash, pre-race treasure hunt, photo booth, and more. Register here.

Visit Pumpkin Patches & Corn Mazes

Visiting a farm in search of the perfect pumpkin is one of the best things about fall (along with pumpkin lattes, of course). Add in corn mazes, farm animals and other family-friendly attractions and you’ve got the makings of an excellent autumn adventure. It’s an ideal activity for toddlers, sans any scary stuff. We’ve rounded up a list of farms that offer pumpkin patches, hayrides and other tot-friendly attractions.

 

Northwest Trek Pumpkin Chomp & Stomp

October 5-6, 2024. 9:30 a.m. ā€“ 3 p.m.

Location: Northwest Trek Wildlife Park, 11610 Trek Dr E, Eatonville, WA 98328

Cost: Online admission is $23 for adults, $16 for youth (3-12), and free for infants 0-2. Buy tickets here.

Watch the animals chomp, stomp and roll all day. Slide and climb at the Kidsā€™ Trek playground, and take a Free-Roaming Area premier tour to spot elk, moose, bison, and more. Or just get close to nature on our paths. Do come in costume ā€“ but adults, leave the scary masks and face paint at home.

 

Trick or Treat with the farm animals at Kelsey Creek Farm

Saturday, October 26. 1 p.m. ā€“ 3 p.m.

Location: Kelsey Creek Farm, 410 130th Pl SE, Bellevue, WA 98005

Cost: $30 (Resident) $36 (Nonresident). Register here.

Ages: 2-10

Put on your Halloween costume and come to the farm for a fun mini event! Your child will get to go trick-or-treating with the farm animals and see what costumes theyā€™re wearing. Youā€™ll also get to decorate a trick-or-treat bag, make Halloween crafts, and play pumpkin bowling. This is an adult/child activity and mostly outdoors, so come dressed for the weather.

 

Tract or Treat at Infinity Farms

Saturday, October 26. 3 p.m. ā€“ 7 p.m.

Location: Infinity Farms, 16523 Issaquah-Hobart Road Southeast, Issaquah, WA 98027

Cost: Free

Join Infinity Farms for their Tract-Or-Treat free family event. Bring the little ones to the farm to trick or treat from 30 local Eastside businesses. Explore the farm, feed the animals and enjoy lots of fall activities.

 

Woodland Park Zoo: Pumpkin Bash

October 26-27.Ā 9:30 a.m. ā€“ 3 p.m.

Location: Woodland Park, 1000 N 50th St, Seattle, WA 98103

Cost: Zoo admission, during the event, one child 12 years and under is admitted to the zoo FREE per a paid adult.

Kids will have a blast trick-or-treating throughout the zoo and participating in the special mascot-led costume parade! The Boo-mazium will be featuring a variety of engaging activities tailored for the youngest visitors. This year, donā€™t miss out on the thrilling Mad Science Show in 1899 Grove on Saturday and Sunday.

Big Pumpkin Bash at Bitter Lake CC

Painting, refreshments, and the always popular cake walk at this Big Pumpkin Bash at Bitter Lake Community Center! Bring a can of food to donate. All ages welcome to the event.

 

Creepy Carnival at Garfield Community Center

Halloween Carnival at Ballard Community Center

Start your Halloween off at the Halloween Carnival at Ballard Community Center with a frighteningly fun-filled evening for the family. Wear your costumes and enjoy carnival games, crafts, and spooktacular activities. All ages welcome.

 

Federal Way Tricks and Treats

Dress up and head to the lower parking lot of the Federal Way Community Center for games, photo ops, giveaways and ā€œlots and lots of candy!ā€. Adults are free.

 

Halloween Boo Bash at Rainier Beach Community Center

The Halloween Boo Bash at Rainier Beach Community Center will be a fright fest of activities, games, and challenges. Join in for a fun, safe, trunk-or-treating event for the whole family. In addition to colossal caches of candy, there will be games, entertainment, and various community resources. All ages.

 

Halloween Costume Crawl for Toddlers at Garfield CC

Monday, October 28. 10 a.m. ā€“ 1 p.m.

Ages: 1-5 years old

Toddlers and preschoolers are encouraged to come to the Garfield Community Center in costumes for a Halloween celebration with play in the Toddler gym, spooky crafts, and yummy snacks.

 

Pumpkin Palooza at Laurelhurst Community Center

Hallo-weee! Story Time and Costume Parade at Kent Library

Wear your costumes to a short Story Time. Enjoy preschool friendly rhymes, songs and books featuring traditional Halloween characters. Stay for a costume parade and trick-or-treating in the library afterwards. All ages welcome with adult. Registration not required.

 

Spooky Magic Show at Third Place Commons
