Get out and Rock the Box at neighborhood ballot drop celebrations

Events planned at for at least 10 ballot drop-box locations

Dropping off a ballot can be a quick errand—and not a lot of fun for kids.

But, a series of neighborhood gatherings called “Rock the Box” aims to make turn this exercise of civic duty (and opportunity for kid civic education) into a chance to meet neighbors and celebrate the act of voting.

The event is hosted by Seattle Strike, a local group that organizes voting, marches and nonviolent collective action to defend democratic rights. Group organizers says volunteers will host ballot-box parties at 10 locations in Seattle and Shoreline from 4 to 8 p.m. Nov. 1, 2 and 3. Residents are invited to return their ballots and spend time with others in their communities.

For parents and caregivers, the gatherings offer an opportunity to bring kids along and show them one way adults participate in elections and work together to keep the democratic process alive and well.

“Rock the Box brings that work into our neighborhoods,” Seattle Strike organizer Paul Birkeland said in the group’s announcement. “When we come together to vote, we’re also building the relationships that help us stand together beyond Election Day.”

Organizer Barbara Taylor said she plans to bring her fiddle and musician friends to play old-time dance tunes. “Dancing encouraged!” she said.

Seattle Strike describes the gatherings as part of its “Vote, March, Strike” approach to political organizing and peaceful collective action. The group notes that events are organized by volunteers, rather than King County Elections.

Voter deadlines

Washington’s deadline to register or update a registration online or by mail was Oct. 26. Eligible voters can still register or update their registration in person through 8 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 3.

Ballots returned to an official drop box must be deposited by 8 p.m. on Nov. 3. According to report by Cascade PBS, Washington’s Secretary of State’s office advises that turning ballots in at a dropbox is the most efficient way to vote at this time.
