The M Factor — Shredding the Silence on Menopause

Watch the film and join the discussion at Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute

If you are a parent in a body with a female reproductive system — pregnancy, and childbirth are not the last of your dances with dramatically shifting hormones. You’re likely to meet the ‘M’ word before your last baby leaves the nest. In most women, it arrives between the ages of 45 and 55.

M meaning menopause, when your ovaries stop releasing eggs and producing estrogen and progesterone, and your periods come to a halt.

Is it possible that there has never been a documentary film addressing “the marginalized or ignored health crisis faced by millions of women every year? According to PBS, there hasn’t. That is until the release of “The M Factor—Shredding the Silence on Menopause!,” which is now streaming on PBS.org.

But if you want to watch this important film with others and hear from leading women’s health experts, don’t miss a screening of the menopause documentary, Live Watch Party: Glowing Through It event in Seattle on Sunday, March 16, starting at noon

About the film

The film confronts the menopause “crisis head-on, challenging societal and medical shortcomings while advocating for a revolutionary approach to women’s health in America.

Produced by Women in the Room Productions and Take Flight Productions, the documentary aims to educate and empower women to seek proper healthcare support and advocate for their well-being.

Of perimenopause and menopause, the film’s makers stress: “One billion women worldwide are already in the throes of it. Yet debilitating symptoms are left untreated, and women are routinely ignored, ridiculed, or shamed when they seek help. This is unacceptable.

“Menopause has ramifications beyond just an individual woman’s well-being. The far-ranging results of women enduring untreated menopause include billions of dollars in lost wages, upended careers, family disruptions, and emotional chaos.”

Menopause in America

Approximately 2 million U.S. women reach menopause each year, and 75 million women are currently in menopause, perimenopause, or post-menopause across the country. Yet doctors receive minimal training regarding the symptoms of menopause or its symptoms, which include:

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Sleep problems
  • Mood changes
  • Trouble finding words and remembering, often called brain fog
