For adults: “Black Sun,” by Rebecca Roanhorse
In a year where the winter solstice and a solar eclipse coincide, Xiala takes her ship on a perilous voyage with a passenger named Serapio, who carries with him a destiny that cannot be stopped. He is a vessel for Grandfather Crow, a god that propels him to avenge a massacre committed against his people. They are traveling to challenge Naranpa, a Sun Priest and the religious authority of Tova. Set in a world built with rich detail and meaning, “Black Sun” is the first book in an epic fantasy tale that brings these three characters together in a formidable power struggle.
For young readers: “Boo Stew” by Donna L. Washington, illustrated by Jeffrey Ebbeler
Cooking is Curly Locks’ favorite thing to do, but no one wants to eat her creations of cat hair cupcakes and batwing brownies. When the Scares, shadowy figures that live in Toadsuck Swamp, come to town and frighten the residents, Curly Locks uses her infamous creations to help her neighbors. With her loving mother behind her, Curly Locks shows us how an underappreciated talent might come in handy, just in the nick of time. “Boo Stew” has fun language to read aloud and the illustrations are full of whimsy with just a small dash of spooky for the season.
