Grandma turned her world upside down to take in a baby | Unsung Hero

Valerie Mannucci opened her heart and her arms to her step-granddaughter, and has not looked back.

Seattle’s Child is proud to partner with the state Department of Children, Youth and Families Strengthening Families Washington to honor outstanding caregivers doing important work on behalf of children.

All month long, we’ll introduce you to Unsung Heroes from around the state: biological parents, grandparents, foster and adoptive parents. Some volunteer at local schools; some have started nonprofits; some mentor others in their communities. Enjoy their stories.

Valerie Mannucci, Seattle

I am nominating Valerie because she has turned her world upside down to provide an amazing home to her step-granddaughter.

Valerie had no warning to prepare for the arrival of a baby in October 2019. When the call was received that there was a baby at the hospital she wholly showed up. With very little connection to the birth parents and no responsibility for the baby, Valerie walked into the baby’s room and held her and has not stopped for more than two years. Her home has become a family home.

As COVID shut everything down Valerie has taken the time from work and been home with baby. Already in her 50s, never having parented, and having a home and life with the freedom to do as she wanted, she has taken on the role of mother with such grace and dedication to our sweet child. It is beautiful to see the bond between these two and the dedication and love Valerie presents.

Valerie is definitely an unsung hero for so selflessly opening her heart and her world and creating a family so filled with love. She says yes every single day to give everything she has to make her child’s life happy, secure, thriving, and enriched.

Nominator: Jo Burleigh

Editor’s note: Jo, Valerie and granddaughter Skai were photographed and shared their story for the Seattle’s Child 2021 holiday card contest. Here they are!
