With diabetes and obesity on the rise among American kids and adults of all races, one Seattle restaurateur is taking action.
Ramiro Rubio, owner of Galerias Gourmet on Capitol Hill, has worked with local health officials and a nutritionist to create a diabetes-friendly menu.
The nutritionist review of the Galerias menu was funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, part of a nationwide initiative to change health outcomes in high-risk communities.
Rubio, who is Latino, says his decision to create menu options for diabetics is in part self-serving. Diabetes runs in his family. The disease is also nearing crisis proportions in the Latino community.
Latin Americans are 1½ times more likely than Caucasians to contract the disease.
Galerias Gourmet is located at 611 Broadway E in Capitol Hill.
